earth fault- amp or house?
Greetings all
I've been reading through this and other forums with the hope I can resolve
my earth buzzing problems. Alas I have been without luck, so let me tell you
my woes and hopefully somebody out there can help me.
Please be gentle, I am new to all this!
I'd been using a Project Debut 2 turntable with a Project pre-amp connected
to an AIWA hi-fi (not a cheap hi-fi, but not proper separates either)
without problem, I could even connect the pre-amp to my PC to copy vinyl to
CD without any hassle.
I then moved house and bought a second-hand Denon PMA450 amp which has a
built-in phono stage. I noticed that on playback of vinyl, especially at a
higher volume, I got a buzz through the speakers. Blaming the Denon's phono
stage I connected the turntable to my old pre-amp and connected this to some
of the other inputs on the amp. It still buzzed.
I then tried connecting the turntable and pre-amp to my PC like I used to at
my old house, again the buzz appeared.
I started thinking that the earth in the new house may be to blame.
But then I dug out my old AIWA hi-fi, connected the turntable and pre-amp to
it like I used to at my old house. The buzzing stopped!
Strange! So basically the results have been:
Turntable Denon Amp Phono stage speakers = buzz
Turntable Pre-amp Denon Amp AUX speakers = buzz
Turntable Pre-amp PC Line-In = buzz
Turntable Pre amp Aiwa Hi-fi speakers = no buzz
Turntable Pre amp Aiwa Hi-fi PC Line In = no buzz
All I can think of is that there is a mains earth problem, it's just that
the Aiwa hi-fi is less susceptible to it. Any ideas folks?
Thanks in advance,
nige
