FWIW ... first audio CD I've purchased which is 'Copy Controlled' ...
released through EMI .. http://www.emimusic.info/uk/

... Beth Orton 'the other side of daybreak'

So, other than recording this CD in real time to the computer's HD can
it really not be digitally ripped? Out of interest, anyone know of third
party software which will allow the disc to be digitally ripped to hard
disc?

Recent plextor drives are apparently pretty good at defeating some of
the protections.

See this page for details http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/97/9.

I suppose this is not much use if you don't have a plextor drive though.

Default Copy Controlled audio CD

more from the 'All Ears school' of uk.rec.audio-ism:

Thanks for the link.

I cannot even use these copy protected CDs in my CD players ( they
depend upon medias according red book standard )

Now there would be hope for me to make an (illegal!!) copy, so I can
hear the music I want.

I don't really think this is illegal, given you bought the original. If it
is then surely also using an iPod to play bought music is also illegal.

That's the thing that really gets me - trying to stop us doing somthing
that, in itself, was never really illegal.

The funny thing is, that until now, I only have
legally purchased CDs in my collection, not even one legal back up of
my own CDs is there. BUT NOW I will be a criminal for a desire to
listen to music, because it has been made legally unavailable to me!

Like I say, I don't really think you will be breaking the law, or at least
it's a grey area. I have a 'music server' in my apartment, with ogg files I
own the CD for, I just chuck the discs in a shoebox under the stairs.

I fully understand the industry's fear and motivation for protecting
their rights, but it a such an annoying and incredible naive attempt
to do it this way. How on earth would they expect to be able to
protect a simple audio format (with out damaging quality) , when most
of the software developers has faced that it is not possible to copy
protect CDs?????

Anything that can be read electronicly can be stored, perfectly if it's
digital data. So their 'copy protection' is really 'access protection'.
They know the only way to stop a copy being made is to stop it being read
in devices they don't approve of.

Ultimately, audio that can be played can be recorded. The real pirates take
74minuites longer to encode 128k mp3s via analogue, so what? new cds are
still on kazza before honest users even get them home.

It's only really the honest ones who suffer.

I would say that what we really see here, is the desperate marketing
effort of the different companies in the data protection business, as
they move towards new market segments...........

And we are the real victims....

The industry managed to make it illegal in Denmark, and they are
probably working on doing so elsewhere.

Really? so is it illegal to just use an iPod etc in Denmark?

Technically in Australia its illegal to copy even a non copy protected
CD - or to rip or make a MP3 of a CD you own.
