Hi folks,
First post in a while - having taken off for summer fun, although summer seems
to be continuing here, with another glorious day into autumn! - I've just
acquired a single NOS, NIB, ARC 101 bass (or mid-bass?) 8" drive unit.

Curiously, the stamped frame (with deadening strips on the four arms) ies
exactly the same outer shape and dimension as the 8" B200 drivers in my old
Kef 104ab speakers, although the magnet is not as massive (the vendor
describes an "outer ring" but that is just the normal ferrite), as the B200.
Coincidentally, I have a spare 104ab cabinet (locally and actually better made
than the originals, with an internal brace and without a protruding cover
"lip", or "picture frame") which is empty apart from the passive radiator.
I'd actually planned to use an odd single Wharfedale Precision Series 4 ohm 8"
from the short-lived top of the range 2 bass unit Model 512 with it, as a
foray into making an experimental subwoofer (yes I know there are huge
pitfalls in randomly mating a drive unit with a box on hand, let alone incl. a
passive radiator, but I thought I'd get around to testing for TS parameters
when I get a round tuit - and the dimensions and PR tuning seemed plausible as
a starting point) to go with some (again, coincidentally ARC but this time
Avalon Radio Corp in NZ) little, well built, LS3/5a "clones" I have - same
cabinet quality, also a B110, equally complex crossover, but Philips tweeter -
but now, solely due to the coincidence of this ARC 101 bass unit exactly
fitting the empty B200 cutout ... I am seeking more information on the ARC101.
Well, I would be anyway ... there isn't a lot on Google, except that they came
in an active (partnered with Nytech amps) and passive version. Early '80's?
So I'm hoping that some UK ukra denizen rembers these and can offer info?
Otherwise it will wait until I can build a test box and extract some T&S
parameters for it (and a few other odd units), but original info'd be nice!
Conicidentally, with the single 512 unit, some years ago I acquired a pair set
of drive units and crossovers for the 3-way 510, and 2-way 507 - still
awaiting cabinets being built for them! But the 512 unit has a much more
massive magnet than the 510/507 8 ohm units do - and I thought it might work
out as a single (modest) "sub", considering the tiny LS3/5a "clones" size.
Any info or comment gratefully (and hopefully graciously!) received ...
Regards, and TIA!
