Default Headphones for home hifi (not portable)

What would be a decent upgrade? I use Sony separates (MD,
tuner, amp, cassette deck) with an old but worthy Marantz
CD75 deck, Rega Planar 3, Denon DR-M24 cassette deck. All
modest stuff, but decent quality and the HD480s did seem to
do it all justice.

Sony themselves used to make some excellent high end headphones. I own
a pair of Sony MDR CD3000s which I purchased new in 1992 or so at a cost
of £300, which I haven't used for many years since my recent electronics
haven't included a headphone socket. I ordered the ATC CA2 pre-amp
today (together with a pair of ATC Active 10 loudspeakers) which does
have a headphone socket, so I look forward to using them again fairly
shortly.

I recommend a look through the Sony catalogue.
