I really hate that. My car radio does things that way. Give me one
function per knob any day.

Agreed. Normally the only *knob* I want to see on an amp is a volume
control, I don't even like multiple inputs and input switching inside
amplifiers...

You gotta have your input switching somewhere - unless you really want
to swap cables every time.

What on earth is this thing? And who is charging as much as 60 squids
for it?

Argos, who else?

Silly me!

Quicker than eBay and a warranty, as well as 15 days no-quibble return if
you don't like it...

Have you seen what secondhand Cyrus IIs are going for on Ebay?

No comment...!! ;-)

Go - treat yourself! You might even like it (no need to tell us, it
can be your guilty secret) ;-)

If I had a Cyrus amp and liked it (I've heard a number of 'em up to the 8
and didn't much like any of 'em) I'd say so - it's not valvies who get all
sweaty and bent out of shape about different types of amps. I couldn't give
a Fiona Fullerton either way - I use valves because I *prefer* the sound for
proper listening and SS when I want the *convenience* (AV or computer for
example)...

Dunno so much about that - you only have to look at RAT to see plenty
of "sweaty and bent out of shape" about SET etc. Most SS types
wouldn't even be able to tell you what configuration their amp is, let
alone care. I'm guessing my Cyrus is AB, but that really is just a
guess - I had never thought about it.

External 'input expanders' are cheap enough and a lot less trouble if/when
things go pooey (my KiT88 is on its 3rd input selector switch and that ain't
ever going to get replaced again - too much fiddly soldering!). Anyway, as
I'm evolving down to only FM radio and vinyl on my main setup these days,
even swapping cables isn't the biggest pain in the world...

Wouldn't know, I don't subscribe to RAT - I'm talking about the sandampers
here who get all foamy about it.....

I got no problem with that..... ;-)

Exactly. All you need to do is take the lid off and squirt some
cleaner in the switches, and you are up and running for years.

You've already been given the fix - buy a proper amp.

I just did:

Cracking little bugger for only 60 quid brand new with
warranty!!

Looks like its worth at least half of what you paid for it, champ!

Keith, we've been wanting you to get a SS amp in the worst way, so you got a
SS amp - in the worst way. :-(

Haven't done any of that - just plugged it in and left it to get on with it.
There were a few for sale at the same time, and I think the prevailing
demand was more than satisfied.

Sure....

So what are you bitching about then? Trust me, mon brave, I've had/heard
more SS amps than you've had hot dinners - the amp I got filled all my
requirements, see the location:

http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/computer.JPG

I wanted a phono stage - I got one. (For LP to HDD at usable levels.)

I wanted a balance control - I got one. (For offset speaker positioning at
close range.)

I wanted to put my monitor on it - I have. (Tricky with the valve amp I had
before.... ;-)

I wanted it *now* (*then*, IYSWIM)....

I got more inputs than I would/will ever need.

It's gotta headphone socket.

It's got Loudness and Tone controls. (I don't use 'em but I like to have
them with SS kit....)

It don't run hot.

It's *instant* on and off.

It's brand new and doesn't smell or crackle....

It cost feck-all.

It's *sweeet*....

I love it.

It sounds very good (astounding actually) in this location wiv mi
MP3s/DVDs - as Phil North will attest after he's heard it Thursday evening.
(Or he mebbe won't - you reading this Phil....??)

Where have I gone wrong?

Answers on a postcard....

Only thing is - what do I do wiv all these *spares*:...

What's wrong with it? Seems to do the job, and didn't cost much.

Tell him Pinkus - the dozy old bugger hasn't twigged this *digital
everything*/computer quality amp isn't much more than a soundcard in its own
case with a PSU, a few more inputs and probably a single chip amplifier!
(Class D??? - Probably not....)

http://www.acousticsolutions.net/PRODUCTS/IMS/SP101.pdf

snip sales pitch where I forgot to say that it's *silver* which mean I can
actually *see* the sodding buttons for a change and has a remote control
which will be dead handy for an amp 10 inches from my fingertips!!

Where have I gone wrong?

I can't see that you have.

Hopefully not, but you never can tell this when you this close to the bottom
of the pond....

Tell me summat. The (outrageous) little speakers it's feeding are stubborn
little barsterds at only 82 dB and the volume display**

http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/display.JPG

reads -10 dB for *loud* - does this matter, being SS an' all...??

(Fit were valves you'd think you were out of the optimum operating range....
;-)

Plenty of mugs on ebay, mon brave! :-)

Ah, oops....

Swims bath oils and my AT-OC5 turned up this morning (fabulous condition,
c/w fixings, screwdriver, brush etc), now I'm sweating on a Technics DD deck
where I *know* the seller hasn't removed the sodding platter (like I asked)
and a*mint* (?) Technics AM/FM tuner.....

**Cyrus II owners eat yer hearts out!! :-P

The Cyrus has a lovely MC input that would suit that OC5 perfectly.
What's the situation with that new amp?

No heart-eating going on here - my Cyrus II performs very nicely and I
won't be buying any new amps for a long time to come. :-P
