am a little worried to turn my amp back on at the moment.
i listened to an album this morning. it finished. nothing playing but amp (primaluna prologue two integrated) and cdp still on. all of a sudden there was a loudish 'pop' from the right speaker. put it down to the mains. then about 60 seconds later another one. switched off the cdp to see if that was causing it. pop again. turned amp volume down. 30 seconds later pop pop pop. turned amp off worried the speaker was going to get damaged. thought i may have heard one of the valves going 'ting' when the pops were occuring, but not sure. this has never happened before for as long as i have had the amp (2 months). valves were supposed to have been newly fitted to a pretty newish second hand amp. have rarely played it very loud, Living Voice speakers quite sensitive (91db/w/m). does anyone know what this could be? will the speaker drivers get damaged if I turn the amp on again to test the valves? me thinks a valve ????????? |

It's a cheap Chinese amp, fitted with cheap Chinese valves, so this is what happens. Dump it on ebay and buy a proper SS amp. -- Stewart Pinkerton | Music is Art - Audio is Engineering Posted Via Usenet.com Premium Usenet Newsgroup Services ---------------------------------------------------------- ** SPEED ** RETENTION ** COMPLETION ** ANONYMITY ** ---------------------------------------------------------- http://www.usenet.com |

Its unlikly it will produce enough output to hurt the speaker, but why not be on the safe side, get a cheap pair from a second hand shop, that way you don't have to worry. -- Nick |

Swap the valves with those from the other channel. If the fault moves, it's a valve. If not, it's one of those *solid state* components underneath the chassis (or a capacitor). -- Eiron No good deed ever goes unpunished. |

That's funny! The proposed solution to a busted amp is a new pair of speakers - - - - Hardly. What Nick suggested was a pair of cheap, secondhand speakers..... I suspect his reasoning is/was that until the problem with the amp is fixed it would be best to take a pair of expensive speakers out of the firing line. But as the guy seems to be a bit of a wattock (my noisy Chinese valves get a whack over the head or binned if they won't behave) perhaps he'd better follow Pinky's advice and give up on valves - they are a different ballgame and not for the feinthearted or congenitally dim..... You've already been given the fix - buy a proper amp. :-) I just did: http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/AS%20SP101.JPG Cracking little bugger for only 60 quid brand new with warranty!! Unlike most (immature, IMO) sandampers, I can easily overlook its noisy Phono Stage (which is otherwise plenty good enough for 'casual'), gutless power delivery (claims to be 35 wpc - my 8 watt SET blows it into the weeds), crosstalk (with radio coming through on the Phono setting almost as loud as the Tuner setting) and concentrate on the incredible (at the price) raft of bonus features - push button input selection, digital tone controls, balance, volume, speaker attenuation (most of which appears to be available on the included remote control!!) as well as the line out, headphone socket and LCD status panel.... http://www.acousticsolutions.net/product.asp?ID=92 Having already proved useful in that it confirms I will almost certainly never give up valves in favour of sandamps, it is destined for my computer setup where it will probably play internet radio/mp3s all day long (as a 'security measure' while I'm down the garage, if nothing else) - plenty good enough for that and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to put a budget system together but doesn't want a ****e old clunker from eBay for the same sort of money at the heart of it!! |

True, particularly if it is an output valve flashing over. When that happens you find out all of a sudden just how much power you can get off 400V or so of HT. What would you rather it was labelled - 'knob'...??? :-) It does control all the digital functions - volume, treble, bass, balance, loudness, speakers on/off... "Don Pearce" wrote It does control all the digital functions - volume, treble, bass, balance, loudness, speakers on/off... I really hate that. My car radio does things that way. Give me one function per knob any day. Agreed. Normally the only *knob* I want to see on an amp is a volume control, I don't even like multiple inputs and input switching inside amplifiers... What on earth is this thing? And who is charging as much as 60 squids for it? Argos, who else? Silly me! Quicker than eBay and a warranty, as well as 15 days no-quibble return if you don't like it... Have you seen what secondhand Cyrus IIs are going for on Ebay? No comment...!! ;-) Go - treat yourself! You might even like it (no need to tell us, it can be your guilty secret) ;-) If I had a Cyrus amp and liked it (I've heard a number of 'em up to the 8 and didn't much like any of 'em) I'd say so - it's not valvies who get all sweaty and bent out of shape about different types of amps. I couldn't give a Fiona Fullerton either way - I use valves because I *prefer* the sound for proper listening and SS when I want the *convenience* (AV or computer for example)... |
