Move over to Plusnet. You can earn me an introductory commission as
well! ;-)

Funny you should say that, I've been thinking seriously about 'migrating' -
I'll give you a shout if Plusnet look interesting. (Haven't studied it
yet...)

Quite so - I'm in the middle of a free upgrade to 8MB/sec right now.

How's the disruption going?, your in for 10 days of constant
disconnection's and upset so as long as you don't depend on the net
connection.

Betcha won't get 8 Meg though, seems only people who live in the
exchanges get that!.......

All good so far. I'm 600 metres from the exchange, straight along the
road, so I'm hopeful - my SNR says it should be a breeze.

I'm regretting writing this even as I write it.

Well we just had one upgraded at a local radio station and it was 10
days of murder, constant interruptions service wouldn't stay connected
for more that a few mins, and to cap it all after then the speed went
from .7 M to 1.25 at best. Only good thing is the up has gone from .25
to .48 Meg.

At home my ntl connection is 2 meg and its as solid as a rock and
consistently fast!

Ntl are upgrading that free to 4 meg shortly and are then standardising
on 10 !.......

I've read similar horror stories on the forums, but I'm hoping they
are just isolated cases.

Cable, yes? I think I would rather have a fixed 6 than a variable
MaxDSL of 8, that might be chopping in and out.

Even the ISP we use has admitted that they are at their wits end with BT
they, the ISP, being the ham in a sandwich....

Well give them their due, the phones, 3 lines we have, have been on the
go since 1996 without any downtime, and it was around a year and a half
ago since the net went down last due to some paddy's digging where they
didna oughta!....

Jeez, I thought *no-one* was going to ask!! :-)

I was just being polite. I thought perhaps you were waiting for
delivery of your new Crown Topper!

Good job it wasn't a 'Hummy' then - I dread to think what you would have
made of that!

What is that exactly?

I've telling Tony offlist that my router is just about always OK - all
lights on and connected to the Belkin site:

http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/belkin%20site.jpg

But frequently I'm getting 'not connected' (in red, top left - where it
says 'connected) first thing in the morning and if it is left idle for
any period during the day it'll likely as not lose the connection to
Pipex!!

(Still no Toppy.....)

I would check if the router firmware is up to date. If it is, and you
still get that, nag pipex, My ADSL is with pipex, and it started doing
that, as I use a cisco router, I can get more stats about the line that
you need to know, but you should be able to get the signal to noise ratio
of the line. if its less than about 10db, then tell pipex, and they will
(after much nagging) kick BT into checking the line.

You may find that its either the router being buggy, or the line needing
its connections cleaning. Often a simple and easy fix.

Connection dropout is only part of the problem - there's the price (23.99
for a 17.99 service) and the fact that my website had been seriously broken
for over a week until yesterday!

Mine dew, this again first thing this morning:

This item is intended for Public Address use. It includes a feedback
detector which then allows you to reduce the gain at those offending
frequencies. This will sound better, and/or allow the PA to be louder
before feedback intrudes. It's not anything suitable for your
application.

OK - it's forgotten already!

Btw Serge, while I'm on - I've 'carpetted' the Jerichos in the pressure
chamber behind the drivers to kill early reflections and I *think* I'm
halfway there! (I'm still trying to avoid circuitry!!) It's also the
other reason I was thinking of a standalone EQ - to see what effect it
might have on them if I hacked the HF off a bit...!!??

If your interest in an equaliser is for the Jerichos rather than
disc-HD dubbing, then yes, it would help. For this application, a
graphic EQ would be better than a parametric, as you can set up a curve
inverse to the published 'speaker curve and get a nominally flat result.

Yep, I can follow that!

Note that the
curve you showed me some time ago when discussing the passive equaliser
was in part because of the high output impedance of the triode
amplifiers. To be anal about it, you would thus need a different curve
for each different amplifier. I would still get a third-octave graphic
equaliser , a10band is just too coarse.

That's not 'anal' - that's interesting! (Remember that the curves I
showed were, in fact, for different drivers!)

I still have yet to try an ss amp on the new/improved version of the
Jerichos, but I'm reluctant to rip the little POS amp from the computer
setup - it's as right as ninepence where it is!

What I need to do is swap one of my spare valve amps for another ss amp!
Any takers?

....???

...??

(Can't believe I said that!! ;-)

Your ULPP valve amps should be close enough to a SS amp to show you the
difference between your triodes and a SS amp. This is because the main
attributes of the SE triodes is a high output impedance causing frequency
response anomalies and high harmonic distortion, especially in the bass.
With your horns' high efficiency, output power isn't an issue. By changing
to an ULPP amp with feedback, you will be reducing the output impedance
and harmonic distortion possibly by a factor of 10. Changing to a SS amp,
you could reduce output impedance and distortion by a further factor of
10, but this won't be as noticeable as the first lot of reductions. If you
prefer the sound with the ULPP amp, (and I did when I heard it) that will
indicate the direction I think you should be going.

I hear what you are saying but the PP amps have been heard here by thousands
and *all* of them (including me) preferred/prefer the SETs by miles - except
just the *one* person!! ;-)

Apart from a number of nuances to the sound that are not easily descibed
without sounding soft, the first thing to go when you swap from a SET to a
PP is the soundstage (depth) - can still be OK but is usually not as good.
There are other reasons for wanting to try ss on the new/improved Jerichos
(Pioneer ss amp being dropped off here later this morning)....

OK, I'll 'fess up - a good example is only last night I played a
newly-acquired, much loved/played (make that *much* loved/played) 2 disc
version of Beeth's finest (9th - HMV ALP 1039/1040, NBCSO/Toscanini) and it
needed a little 'trimming' to hack the (not inconsiderable) hiss back. I got
several other versions but I wanted to hear this one (and will do
again)....!! There are a number (many, actually) of other, similar
examples!!

(I await now for some clueless twerp to suggest the CD versions!! :-)
