Cambridge Audio music server (networking)
 

Ok,

Have spent about 3 hours trying to get this to work with the same
result.... nothing.

I firstly went through the system with a fine tooth comb and made sure
I hadn't missed anything - all was present.

Next I updated the software which appeared to be the same as what was
on the system already. So my current system information is as follows:

Under System/Information:
System Version 02.01.50
OS Version 3.36
Software Version 02.09.84
HD stuff....
Settings 6116_06.ca
Installer v07.00/B/P

Under Settings/System/System Information:
Unit Name Azur

Under Settings/System/Product/Network/Options:
Automatic IP settings (DHCP) - i've switched this off

Under Settings/System/Product/Network/Ethernet:
IP Address 192.168.1.8
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1 (this is my ADSL router)
Name Server 210.15.254.240 (ISP's Name Server)

At this point I selected the Apply option to save the network settings
than went to Settings/System/Content/Add Location/File Location and
added a Friendly name, plus the name of the network share
("\\tigoshi\mp3s" minus the quote marks) and left the username as Guest
then went to Scan and each time it comes back with "Content location
could not be found".

A diagram of my network setup can be found at
http://www.bigcat.net.au/temp/network.gif to give a better idea of how
the network is setup and where the 640H connects to things.

I've tried turning off firewalls on the XP box to see if that makes a
difference to no avail. I even switched the DHCP server on the router
on and all I got was the 169.something virtual private network address
which meant it didn't find the DHCP server. I know the cabling is all
fine because as mentioned in a previous post i tested it using a laptop
to the point where the 640H is plugged into and was able to browse the
share fine.

The only other point to note is that my computers are networked in a
Windows Server Domain in that the XP machine requires me to logon which
is checked by the other machine via Active Directory (the whole windows
server thing), but this seems not to be the main problem as my laptop
is configured for my work Domain and differs from this Domain here.

Any thoughts? Suggestions??

Oh dear :-( You *MUST* update the software as there are
some dreadful glitches in the first version it was shipped
with. Tip back up all your music filese first before doing
the update. The process is very easy to do and the result
is a much more stable machine. I would actully reconmend
wiping the HD, update the software and then reload all the
music

Hi Berky,

You sure have given it a good go.

OK a few thoughts here to start with.

Your assigned IP address for the 640H is it in the allowed
IP range for the router.

Next go to your Windoze machine and

Start Search Computers or People Computer on Network
Computer Name (Azur?) - hit search and see if it finds it.
Sometimes you have to kick the process along ;-)

Next *IF* this still doesn't work try searching for the
Windoze computer on the network. That is, see if it will
find itself. This way it will check to see if the computer
name is the same as its network name. Make sure it is the
same spelling and same case without any non-alphanumeric
characters.

Another thing to check is that you are running a TCIP
network so make sure any other protocol like NetBeui is
disabled. I got caught here once before ;-)

Try these and get back if any more probs.

Ok,

Here's the latest update - sorry its taken me a couple of days to post
this.

I sent an email to CA support about this issue as well and received a
response indicating that because my XP machine was part of a Domain
that this may be the cause of it not connecting. Anyway I thought I
would step it right back to basics.

Firstly I removed the XP box from the Domain and brought the 640H into
where the XP box is located. I set up a small hub and plugged the two
network cables into this. Voila, after some messing around it worked
but here was the strange thing; it would only work if I set the gateway
to the IP address of the XP box, if I set it to the actual IP of the
router (the proper gateway) it didn't want to know about it. At least I
was getting somewhere.

Next I moved the 640H out to where the main network switch is located
(another room) and plugged it in there and tried the same thing - no
problems. Connected fine and found the share.

When I moved it back to the lounge room where I want it to live it then
couldn't find it. I checked all the cabling with a cable tester to make
sure there were no dead pins or switched pins and it all worked fine.
The only thing I can think of is that it doesn't like a cable run that
long (it's only about 20metres tops but longer than the other runs I
was testing it on).

Anyway, primary problem solved - the 640H will not work within a
Windows Domain environment, it obviously doesn't have the necessary
networking components needed to access the share (strange considering
my laptop which is not part of my home Domain could see the share with
no problems).

I have a spare machine I will build up as a dedicated mp3 box and it
can sit closer to the 640H and hopefully that will work.

Overall, I'm a bit dissapointed in how the 640H handles networking
considering it sells it as one of its features. I just think some more
effort needed to be put into it or hopefully will be in a future update
(depending on how regularly they are released).

Now you are mixing two different network types. A hub will
allow other machines to connect to a *server* where as a
router *is* the server. You need to be very clear on this
and I'm no network expert at all.

So a hub would connect to a server that had say an IP
address of 198.1.1.5. On a domain through a router the
router would be 198.1.1.1 (the first address) and then the
XP machine could be 198.1.1.5 BUT you would set the range on
the router as 198.1.1.1 - 198.1.1.100 if you wanted 99
machines to connect to it. I hope I have this right and if
I haven't someone here will surely correct me ;-)

Tip: I am using XP Professional and I have heard of some
people that have problems with XP Home and the CA 640H.
Funny thing, one of them was my dealer that sells them and
he even paid a network pro to come out and solve it :-))
Which he couldn't :-)) I laughed anyway :-))

Professional seems to have better networking abilities.
Anyway you need to have another good look at what you are
doing. It will work.

It will work on a domain, but it does not have the capability to provide the
necessary authentication. Create a share on a machine, enable the Guest
account (not a good thing to do usually) and it should see the share.

If the 640H is set to dhcp and it connected to the hub that the router is
connected to, it will get all it's necessary details. It should do a
broadcast when it boots up to check for any dhcp servers.

There are several designated private network address ranges (198.1.1.1 is
not one of them)
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

These are the only ones you should be using on your internal network.

In the small hub did you plug in the router as well? As it wouldn't find the
router as a gateway unless it was also plugged into the small hub.

In regards to it not finding it, is the XP machine still on the main switch
as well? Also if there is noise on the line, sometimes forcing it back to
10base speed can help.
