I have scaffolding going up next week, and I'm intending to take the
opportunity to replace my TV aerial. While I'm up there I'd like to put
an FM aerial on the pole as well. I don't need anything too high end,
I'd just like to get rid of the slight hiss I get from my crappy loft
mounted 'halo' aerial. I only ever listen to radios 3 and 4 (middle age
is creeping up, so I guess I'd better allow for radio 2 as well ;-).
I'm thinking of getting one of these

does that seem sensible? Which transmitter should I be pointing it at?
I'm in Holloway, North London, N7 8ND. The telly comes from Crystal
Palace, do they broadcast the radio signal as well?
Crystal place does in fact rebroadcast the outputs of Wrotham but displaced by
some 304, or was that 384 kHz for which there is a BBC R&D article around
somewhere
However for your location Wrotham directly is the best bet.
Might I suggest that you get one of the following 4 element Triax aerials
which have a well designed Balun to match to the feeder cable, better than
that other tlc one;!.

If you can afford the extra few bob there is a Five element one which is that
little bit better. What you should be aiming for, pardon the pun, is to get as
"clean" as possible signal, absolute gain isn't the be all and end all but
freedom from multipath is what's more useful especially in urban environs such
as London.
Connect it directly to your tuner with a decent grade of co-ax such as CT100
and you will have an excellent receive system, which for the money is one of
the best investments in audio you can make!
Enjoy
