Crisis averted, I've managed to find a way, being a bit more brutal
than I would have liked, of fitting it through the front, so the
tweeter fits as it should be,

The actual trouble was is that the mesh over the front is secured
behind the front panel, which is glued into the cabinet, and what made
matters a little bit more awkward, the front panel protrudes from the
rest of the cabinet so that there is a chamfered edge, I've got a
picture of it if anyone is interested:
