Only recently arrived in Farnham/Hindhead area, so haven't found out yet...

There is an another amplifier I can try; just need to get hold of
another tuner...

Well, I realised my Pure DAB digital radio had a 'stereo out' socket so
connected it as a tuner to a free input on my JVC receiver.

Result: Everything perfect!

At first I asssumed this proved that there was a problem with the VHF
tuner section of the receiver, but then the possibility came to mind
that perhaps the digital radio signals here are much stronger than
the VHF.
(However, according to the DAB web site we shouldn't be receiving
digital radio at all in this post-code area. But we do - in any part of
the house, although a few miles away in Farnham there is a problem.)

Either way, I'm happy that we can now listen to ClassicFM distortion free
on the HiFi, even though we still don't know what the problem was...

(Next step is to try the receiver back in its previous home, to see if it
now has a problem there.)
