DAB am I missing something?
I only take an interest in Hi Fi when my system falls to bits,
which it has.
I'm looking at a Hi Fi mag as I write, it appears to have lots of
tuners and receivers (well not receivers, they seem to be missing
from the listings) that are not DAB. Am I missing something,
isn't analogue being switched off soon? Or did I misunderstand
the news broadcasts of a while ago and FM radio is carrying on
and only analogue TV is due to be switched off?

I have visions of a rack of kit suddenly going like a car in a Laurel and
Hardy film - panels fall off, there are bangs and smokes, bits make tinkling
noises as they fly out ofthe cases, followed by 'The Reid' appearing from
the billowing clouds with clothes in tatters and face covered in soot.
"Ooh, cor blimey, my system's fallen to bits..."

There's no switch off date for FM radio unlike analogue TV.
I'd not want to lose my FM for DAB only, as the quality leaves much to be
desired on most stations. The 'suits' have gone for quantity rather than
quality so the data rate is too low.
However, DAB gives a choice of stations that you'd otherwise only get on
AM or not at all so might be considered the lesser of the two evils for
those.
You might consider a Freeview tuner for radio - they tend to be much
cheaper than FM ones, although don't have the same selection of stations.

Well, actually Dave, I think I am right in saying that all stations
that are on DAB can be found on DTTV and/or satellite, either of which
is considerably better quality than DAB. The only problem is that its
difficult to get DTTV and/or satellite in a moving car!

Analogue FM will be around for a very long time to come. The
Government's intention is to turn off analogue TV, as this will release
several hundred MHz of bandwidth for other things. As most people will
have converted to digital TV by 2010, it won't matter too much if
analogue goes. Turning off FM would only release 20 MHz, and would
****-off thousands of people.
DAB currently provides arguably worse audio quality than FM albeit with
a greater choice of programmes, and this quality is to get worse as more
of the bandwidth is to be used for non-audio purposes as multiplex
operators can make more money that way. The only way to improve matters
is for there to be additional multiplexes installed, but as no-one is
yet making money out of DAB, I can't see that happening anytime soon.

Correction: if all goes to plan ALL people will be using digital-only
TV by the end of 2012.
