If there are some good options with price tag significantly lower than
500£,
they would be welcome.

Have you tried the Cambridge Audio 640C or the MkII version?

Rega Apollo - see review http://www.stereophile.com/cdplayers/606rega/

Retails at 500 quid.

I;ve not heard it but a freind who is a Rega dealer says its a winner.

What tripe - cue Arny to come galloping up and rant about trading in myth
and audio legend.....

Er, except that he won't - he's got 'selective vision' problems.....

(Not to mention selective hearing problems also!! :-)

I was wondering how long it would take to answer the original poster
with suggestions from the top of his price range.

Is the Arcam CD73 still in production?

well read the rave review in Stereophile. The DAC + transport paradigm
is dead.

For 500 you'd probably be able to find an Opera Consance player. They
are amazingly good.

Err....... Just a little idea..........

If a CD player has digital out, it simply doesn't matter which one you use (
aside from personal aesthetic preferences ) if you have an external DAC !

Alive and well. It's just that the DAC is in the receiver these days.

What review do you mean?

Chinese?

Where it's actually manufactured is incidental, unless of course the audio
alchemists reckon that Chinese copper foil for pcbs sounds inferior to European
or American foil !

How long before we have OFHC copper foil for pcbs ? Or even silver ? Why did the
self-appointed 'purists' miss this trick or were they simply fruit-and-nut-cakes
to begin with after all ?

Does anyone actually care ?

I just didn't recognize the brand. I have plenty of Chinese manufactured
stuff in my systems.

One short of a triple-jump!

Does anyone actually care ?

And it's a triple: Chinese foil to OFHC pcb foil to lack of outrage over
the first two. :-)

Is most copper manufactured as oxygen-free? Even Quad switched to
oxygen-free for delay lines and I doubt they think that makes an audible
difference.

It's pure 'marketing ********' but heck, you have to give some jobs to the
irredeemably terminally useless and this is where they can score the big numbers !
