Default Cyrus 2 + PSX - no phono problem

Hi all, I hope someone can help with this...

I've purchased a lovely Cyrus 2 and PSX, but I can't get any phono
output. I know the other outputs work fine, and the record player is ok.

I did notice on a google search that:

"As I remember the Cyrus 2 has to be mains powered too in order to feed
the phono power supply and the power indicator LED."

Could someone confirm that this mean that both the PSX and the Cyrus 2
need to have a power cable plugged in (rather than just the PSX). I
/really/ don't want to be cavalier about it.

It might be worth noting that I have no power indicator LEDs on either
unit, and both units are 'push' power switches rather than 'toggle'.

Thanks in advance,

Thom

Cyrus 2 and PSX both need to be powered. If you have a Phono card installed
then the Cyrus 2 power is used for the card only (e.g. you will get tape
output without the PSX attached or plugged in.) If, however you wish to play
anything through the speakers, both will need to be connected via the
umbilical and mains powered.
Hope this makes it clear.

Thanks, that is really helpful... it is the first time I've owned a
Cyrus 2 /and/ PSX, so I wasn't sure.

While I'm here, turning the volume knob causes crackling in the speakers
- do you know what would be the easiest way of sorting this?

Are you far from Cyrus? See
http://www.cyrusaudio.com/content.asp?ContentID=21
A couple of years ago I managed to drop both units, smashing the fronts. I
took them in to Cyrus and they repaired them and also checked and replaced a
few items. Made them look and sound like new. So impressed I have now bought
their PreX and Monos.
If you live too far away, give them a ring, they have always been very
helpful.

I might have to try that...

I plugged in the Cyrus, and there is a loud buzzing from the speakers
(there is music too, though muted, which must be a promising sign).

Cyrus on, PSX off - nothing
Cyrus off, PSX on - buzzing
Cyrus on, PSX on - buzzing
Cyrus unplugged, PSX on - all fine, but no phono (of course).

There was also a burning smell at first - but it passed quickly. Fuse?

On further inspection, the buzzing is only present on the Phono, and
Mute channels, and the others play fine.

After another look, the buzzing isn't 'constant' and responds to taps to
the case of the Cyrus.

Have you and ideas?

Grr - I really thought I'd get to exercise some of my vinyl tonight.

Can't really help, sorry. Sounds dodgy though. Give Cyrus a ring, as I said,
they are very helpful.
Best of luck.

You're too quick with your help! I was just preparing to post a rather
sheepish message where I explained that I had just learned the
importance of the MM and MC phono switch.

Looks like I got away with that burning smell.

Thanks loads for your assistance though.

Regards,

Thom
