I wouldn't go so far as to say that - righter it seems than Ruark, Tannoy,
Rogers, B&W, Wharfedale, KEF, JM-Labs, Dynaudio, Jamo (Concert) and gawd
knows how many others proved to be at least....??

Quite so. Never be satisfied - you'd have to sell your circular saw,
and that would never do.

Agreed. Keith's journey to audio Nirvana is one of the most interesting
topics on this group. He is one of the few "hands-on fettlers" - fast
become a rare breed.

Absolutely not - you don't have to travel far from this group to find hoards
of people hacking and chopping bits of wood or setting fire to the carpet
with their soldering irons! My piddly little doings are chicken**** compared
with them!!

Check this out for a start:

And then there are countless little, specialised forums!

There are very few fettlers.

OK, but there are a number who have done plenty in the past - I'm only a
latecomer!! ;-)

My problem is I don't/won't take anybody's word for *anything*.....

Seems to me the 'fettlers' are mainly those who mess about with ancient
technology which by nature *needs* fettling. Not that there's anything
wrong with that as a hobby. Anymore than playing around with old cars,
etc. As long as one retains a hold on reality...

Ancient technology?

Then I suggest you guve it a try. That would be retaining a hold on
reality. Good luck.

How would you describe something dating back to well over 100 years?

It's possible I bought my first record before your father was born. I have
a large collection of LPs and still sometimes listen to some. Unlike many,
I didn't junk them and dispose of a means of playing them when CD got
established and was shown to be so much better. Because CD is capable of
far better results doesn't mean I can't still enjoy listening to an LP.

Depends on what it is. If it's a redwood I describe it as new growth.
If it's technology like Photography I describe it as mature. If it's
something like oil painting or sculpting I describe it as timeless. Do
you have or know of any records that are "well over 100 years" old?
Modern vinyl LPs are what less than seventy years old? Srtereo LPs are
what les than 60 years old? We are talking about a technology that has
steadily improved over the years despite the denial of dorks like you.
It is a mture technology. CD has matured as well. That is why the best
ones have been made more recently. The idea that newer is better is
absurd. I guess video is better than film? Microwave is better than
conventional cooking?

1923.

Just because you claim you can enjoy an LP doesn't mean you have a grip
on reality. That you would use this as an argument suggests you have a
long way to go. Maybe you can provide us with some evidence in the way
of bias controlled listening comparisons?

:-)) I would hardly call checking the bias on a quad of EL34s every three
months as fettling, Dave. Owning a valve amp is no more demanding than
that. But, I was referring to the people who actually get up off their
backsides and draw and build something, right from scratch.
It takes a lot of dedication - most people take the softer option
of an amp from a cardboard carton:-)

Not that there's anything wrong with that as a hobby.

Or as a profession either. I am sure you know of Patrick Turner,
Erik Lindholm, and many others who make a good living building
bespoke valve amps for a discerning clientele. More importantly
they are happy and totally committed to what they are doing.

Anymore than playing around with old cars,

What is reality? Please don't tell me that sound-sync for
TV soaps or recording string quartets has anything to do with
reality :-)))

Iain
