Got an old Aiwa (IIRC) amp driving some 4 ohm speakers. Getting one of the
speakers cutting out occasionally but it doesn't seem to be wiring. Could it
be the old volume pot or caused by the 4 ohm speakers running of an 8 ohm
amp?

Do you run the amp flat out for hours on end?

Does the amp get silly hot?

Do the speakers cut in and out if you wriggle the volume comtrol backwards
and forwards?

Most quoted amplifier load and speaker impedances are nominal - speakers
vary in impedance with frequency.

Easy way to check if the load is too low for the amp is to wire the
speakers in series and connect to the suspect channel only, ans see it it
still occurs. But my guess is the fault is elsewhere.

**The volume pot, output relay (if it exists) or a dry solder joint
somewhere. Impedance mismatches would cause BOTH channels to shut down.

Amplifier fault or damaged speaker wiring - check wiring for intermittent
shorts - look at connections on amp & speaker.

Nope. Does get left on with no input sometimes. Ran the same speakers flat
out on an Arcam amp of the same wattage and blew the foams out of the
speakers, but the amp was perfectly happy.

Does the amp get silly hot?

Doesn't seem to, but does get warm.

Not tried it. It's my bird's setup and I've never heard it do it.

OK. leaves you two options AFAICS.....

1) Have the whole house rewired and see if it still does it...

2) Go mad, lob the amp out and get another one...

3) Attack the pot with a bucket of contact cleaner or swap it?

Hookay.....

That's also valid...!!
