I've misplaced the manual to an AIWA NSX-5777 music centre.

What is the purpose of the Line Out sockets, is Line Out an
unamplified signal as opposed to the various speaker outputs which I
assume are amplified.

Line Out is a signal at line level which is *unaffected* by the amplifier's

available Acoustic Solutions SP101 amplifier:

....which is no *power house* but a perfectly useful and very versatile
little amp for only 60 nicker from Argos!!

I use mine to 'gather' signals and route them to a valve amp via the Line
Out. The only downside is that there is no 'remote volume control' going
this way and the amp has to be on (with Speakers Off) to enable
switching....

Line Out usually IS affected by all volume/tone controls. Tape Out is
what you have described. At least for most domestic equipment
although there will be exceptions.

I thought line out was line level (2V) and fixed, and headphone out (in
this situation) and speaker out (on sound cards) do the variable thing?

'Pre Out' is the one where the signal can be modified by the 'host' amp's
pre section...

Basically, yes.

Line Out suits Line In of a recording device, or maybe Line In of an
additional amplifier.

Mini Disc, maybe? If they are, then they are standard Line In
connections.

That's a little bit confusing as I would guess the Video/Aux and MD (line
level) to be inputs.

If the Line Out sockets do not provide a line level signal to another
amplifier/recorder/whatever then they are possibly an input for another
gadget's Line Out sockets, IYSWIM - poor labelling or poor grouping, I would
say, but you are unlikely to do any great harm if you have a bit of a poke
about with another source....??

Volume control set very low, of course....

Line out is to feed to another appliance - in this case since it has
an input for Mini-Disc then it is safe to assume that the output is
intended to permit recording of whatever source is selected on the
music centre.
