Since Saturday 9th December there has been a weak signal on BBC
national services on DAB, where I live near the centre of Leicester.
Local services have not been affected. Also, they went off altogether
for a bit on Saturday.

I've tried calling BBC Reception Advice, but they say they don't know
of any transmitter problems.

According to the display on my set, it seems to be the 'Digital 1'
multiplex that is affected.

Anybody know what's happening?

If you only knopw of one receiver that's affected, the chances are it's that
receiver or its aerial that are at fault.

So because they do not know they are going to do nothing, even though they
know now from you!

Oh yeah, now I remember, they also said it might be due to 'low air
pressure', when I phoned before it was normal at approx. 1000
millibars, but still a weak signal, over the weekend it did get down to
980 mb. I thought DAB was immune to propagation variations due to the
use of 'Single Frequency Networks', and anyway it's *high* pressure
that causes problems due to refraction?

It's been OK up till now, and other transmitters/multiplexes are coming
through normally. My set is a Roberts 'Gemini 15' portable with rod
aerial fully extended BTW.

I have noticed before that the signal strength for BBC national DAB
varies, I used to listen at a previous workplace, also near central
Leicester, some days it was fine, others it would keep breaking up.

Lift conditions can make signals travel farther than they would otherwise
travel, which causes problems with DAB reception due to signals arriving
"too late" (technically: arriving with a delay relative to the first strong
signal path that is longer than the guard interval, which causes
interference).

There's not much Bill doesn't know about VHF and UHF broadcast reception
mate :-) He's not the one with a lot to learn.
