What kind of sound quality can I expect from a Sony receiver?
Circumstances (financial, domestic harmony etc) are forcing me to
change my kit. I currently use a PC source for my music, I have a
Rotel processor and 5 channel power amp. I listen through Stax
headphones and Dynaudio Contour speakers for the front and Audiences
for surround. I guess I'm not a purist, because I like to listen in
pseudo suround (Pro Logic 2).
I have just sold the processor and the power amp will follow. I'm
looking at a Sony ES receiver (3200 or 5200). I can't deny the AV
switching and flexibility will come in useful. Now, my mind is already
made up in a sense as I've sold part of my kit, but I just want to
prepare myself for what to expect. In recent years, I've joined the
"everything sounds much the same except the speakers" camp...to a
degree. I did have a cheapo Yamaha receiver but the Rotel units
knocked spots off it.
Have things changed much in the last few years? I'm guessing a £700
Sony receiver is going to at least be competent, and the measured
performance is good. Reputable publications (well, Gramophone) give it
a big thumbs up.
Am I going to experience a big decline in performance or can I expect
much the same as what I've been used to?
