55dBf means 55dB above 1 femtowatt, or 10^12 watts
55dB is a power ratio of 3.16 x 10^5
so 55dBf is a power level of 0.316 microwatts.

Assuming a standard 75 ohm antenna, that translates to 4.87 mV, so I'd
say that was a pretty good signal.


OK, good. Thanks for slogging that out Serge - I had wondered once or
twice if I'd got 'enough' aerial as a wee bit of hiss can creep in if
the signal drops as low as 40 dBf, which it can do occasionally.

That tuner uses a common place audio demod chip just to drive the sig
and deviation meters!. They use a totally separate pulse count
discriminator for the audio .. and excellent it is too:))

This is why I queried you not liking vinyl - to me, the comparison
between FM and DAB is very like the comparison between LP and CD. They
both do a similar job differently and they both have their strengths and
weaknesses. (And preferring one doesn't mean I hate the other...)

Bear in mind I mostly use valve amplification and, often as not,
Lowthers - which goes a long way to making DAB sound not too bad at all,
so I'm not going to say FM completely ****es on DAB. It does in the
final analysis, but the DAB can sound very acceptable on my setup.

Also, Classic FM on FM can get a bit much when I'm on the TLS80s (too
much 'wind in the mic') - when I chop to the DAB to 'clean the sound
up', although this is never a problem when I'm on the Lowthers, as they
are too sensible to try and dredge 'usable sound' up from the same muddy
depths!!

DAB on the handy little Acoustic Solutions FM/DAB set I use is very good
compared to some I have heard and I have somewhat revised my opinions,
but the FM is unfortunately always crap, despite the signal strength
appearing to be quite good when on the main FM aerial!

Hardly a fair comparison, but these were both taken only so many minutes
ago and even the *quiet ending* on the R3 bit shows a damn sight more
needle excursion than the Classic FM bit!!

(Excuse the noises - the hiss is the camera, the wheezing is me...!! :-)

They probably sent a free one there, and have based their claim on the
fact that it may, just possibly, not have actually been thrown in the
bin.


Well certain recording engineers seem to use this sort of thing. I know
that Andy Jackson, who does most of the Pink Floyd remasters, uses China
Cones.
