I am one of
those 'too acclimatised' to the du Pre/Barbirolli versions, etc, to find
this one easy to warm to.

Interesting.

I always found Du Pre too overwrought for me and I much preferred the
more restrained approach of Paul Tortelier and Beecham , for example.

Nice to read something about the music rather than the technology!

Cheers

David

Agreed. She always seemed to be saying "look how much I'M feeling"
rather than communicating the music. Rather like the way that girl
(can't remember her name - the one who died) mangles "Over The
Rainbow" with excessive emotion. Seems to appeal to the groundlings
though.

There's quite a choice available - it must be the most popular cello work.

Nice to read something about the music rather than the technology!

If you're not interested in the technology there are hundreds of groups
devoted to music. The 'audio' in the title gives clue to what this one is
about.

I know what you mean, but I guess I tend to be biassed in favour of any
recording where Barbirolli conducted. :-)

I also like the Tortelier version I have, but as you might guess, also the
early Navarra/Barbirolli. :-)

Slainte,

Jim

This is presumably the Elgar - I didn't see/hear the programme. (The
bloody Proms are bad timing for me - I still haven't played last years
recordings!!)

I agree. I have a fabulous mono JDP/LSO/Barber Olly (HMV ALP2106) which
is very dramatic (the definitive?) but also a little *laboured* and the
'cello is very *ripe* when compared to the Robert Cohen/LPO/Del Mar I
have on CFP40342. Unfortunately the CFP is a poor recording (swishing
noises at the all-important start) but the music *soars* in comparison
and the cello does not stand so far forward...

(If I had known you were so keen on the 'cello, I would have pointed you
to these:

But too late now, unfotunately! ;-)

Steady on, you'll get a smack from this group's self-appointed
*owner/moderator*....

:-)
