I think we all know about expensive "audiophile" quality speaker cable.
Although I don't believe their claims about amazing sounds, those
overly-thick, braided, exotic-looking cables *are* pretty.

Does anyone sell similar cables without a huge pricetag? Not having to wade
through marketing BS about "soundstage" and "holographic instruments" would
be nice too.

I can't see any of this stuff costing more than pennies per meter to make.
I'm wondering if an Internet dealer has picked up than this and is selling
nice looking cables for 20p/meter or whatever.

B&Q usually have a small selection of speaker cables prepacked in useful
lengths...

It may (or may not) be useful to choose 'thicker' cables for the reasons
outlined on the above page. Depends on your audio system, in particular how
long the cable runs need to be.

hose (the sort with the string wrapping inside it), is looks like
really fancy expensive stuff. If you also thread a string of blue LEDs
in there, you will have something worth ten grand at the very least.

It'll certainly impress the neighbours.

I'm actually asking for a collegue at work who was going to buy some of the
expensive wire you see in hifi shops. I gave my opinion that it isn't worth
the money sound-wise, but he insists he still wants the fancy stuff because
it looks nicer. Personally I use two-core mains cable, but I must admit it
looks utilitarian and couldn't be considered "hifi jewelry".

If there was something that looked fancy, but came without the questionable
sonic claims, it'd save him some money and keep it away from dishonest
marketing companies.

I've looked around on Google a bit, and I'm surprised I couldn't find
something cheap that looks like the "high-end" brands.

Anyway, I seem to have met some hostility elsewhere in this thread. Sorry, I
don't meant to get into a debate on how different cables "sound". I'm not
trolling, just looking for advice on a particular product. If other people
enjoy expensive wire (that I can't hear the difference with), that's fine
by me.

Cables will always trigger this group (it's about all that does) but
understandably so - these days, even 'respected' hifi publications are
not above taking advertising revenue from some people peddling the most
blatant bull**** 'sucker products' including silly *audiophile* cabling!
But not everybody wants plain white flex snaking about the room and it's
a free world (or was...), if your friend wants to pay a little more than
the sub £1/m sensible stuff for a 'posher' appearance, have a look at
the 'installer cables' on Impact Audio's site:

This Monacor silver plated copper cable looks and feels a lot more
expensive than the white plastic stuff:

32 pence per metre at Farnell for 2.5mm^2 cable, which is adequate for
most domestic installations.
