Poor research by the art department. Plenty of engineers around they could
have asked - even if they couldn't find something on the web.

Indeed it does. The real reason it is used on BD is because its a fairly
cheap, dispensable mic.


I'd have thought because of their age now quite valuable?

Few are willing to use a condenser there. In
the same way the few people use large condensers for drum overheads.
With flailing sticks there is a good chance they will get damaged or at
least dented. Here the AKG C451 family is ideal.


I've never had an overhead damaged by a drummer. Perhaps TV ones are less
maniacal.
