**Which doesn't answer my question. Try again
Trevor, I have no idea who you are, but I think we should start with some basics of communication. I have no reason to take orders from you, so can I suggest that you pay some attention to how you speak to posters? For instance, in this case I would suggest "could you be more specific in answering my question?" Once we have established some basic communication skills, we may profitably proceed to the content. He doesn't need to be polite, Andy - he's from Horse Trailier*. Where he comes from any 'fair dinkum digger' (with, presumably, a year's sheep-shagging bonus in his pocket) can snap his fingers and any valve amplifier shop owner, car dealer or pretty woman will bend over backwards to give him a *test ride*.... *Don't knock it, they're a lot more advanced than we are - they produce TV crap like 'Neighbours' and send it over here and we watch it (apparently) while we produce TV crap like Coronation Street and we watch that also.... |

*Don't knock it, they're a lot more advanced than we are - they produce TV crap like 'Neighbours' I'm a great admirer of Australians, though I do believe that somewhere in the universe is a teacher of manners who is capable of beating some sense into a small minority of them. I also know the original lyrics of Neighbours off by heart..... "....dum de dum....With a little understanding, we can make the world a better place... dum de dum" On top of that I used to be in a band with the guy that sang the first version of the Neighbours theme. Beat that!!! |

OK, you asked for it.... Earlier today I bumped into my next door neighbour at the (twin) garages and within 2 minutes I'm on the ground reading his tyre sizes (two dodgy tyres just failed the MOT on his car) and I hear that the local hifi shop (robber barons - been living off this township at full RRP for years) are going to fix his VCR for only 50 quid....!! I said 'scrub that for a game of soldiers, I've got a nice DVDR you can have for nowt' (I don't watch telly and I simply don't use it) and gave him a brief showing how it works (like I *know*???!!). The look of terror on his face was a sight to behold - I said 'come back later and we'll go over it again'. He did, just in time to knacker me for going on a little 'bike ride and we made a little more progress! He's just run off again (a bit wiser) but will be back later/tomorrow for another tilt at it!! I wonder if the electronics boys have any idea how much business they are missing by not fielding *simple versions* of stuff like DVDRs with big, clear buttons that have simple legends like 'Record' and 'Erase' on the zappers - just to blow the bloody disk (single disk recorder) you have to negotiate any number of twists and turns through several menus and press the same buttons repeatedly!! (Reminds me my father-in-law, a 'radar pioneer', couldn't ever set his VCR for a timer recording!! :-) |

The manufacturers have often made attempts at dumbing down technology to make it easier for some folks, but the items don't sell well in the shops due to upselling and journalistic promotion of more exciting alternatives. This is a great product http://www.emporialifephone.com/. I'd like one, ever heard of it? How many folks can really cope with the intial menu shown on loading a DVD? what combination of buttons must I press to watch the film? Why doesn't the 'play' button do what it says? -- Adrian C |

They don't have to do anything with the machine - just offer a 'simple/no ****' version of the remote control!! We keep being told that 90% of the population is over 60 (or Eastern European - I forget which) - why hasn't someone had the nouse to cater for it? This is a great product http://www.emporialifephone.com/. I'd like one, ever heard of it? I'd like one of those!! ?? In fact, I might get one - one thing you need on a 'bike run is a mobile in case you need to be recovered! How many folks can really cope with the intial menu shown on loading a DVD? what combination of buttons must I press to watch the film? Why doesn't the 'play' button do what it says? It's all part of the narrowing process.... |

Why doesn't the 'play' button do what it says? -- Adrian C Thanks for the link, I might just have found my next 'phone....I still use a Nokia from the '90s as it is a telephone, no camera, no computer, no MP3 player, just a telephone on which I make telephone calls. I tried to replace it a year or so ago when it became unreliable, and couldn't find anything that didn't have a load of extra stuff on it. I have a camera for pictures, and a laptop for computing, and as to MP3, don't even go there. I ended up replacing it with an even older Nokia, that I happened to have at home unused. Glad to see someone has decided to make a 'phone that's just that. S. -- http://audiopages.googlepages.com |
