The thread "What a sad excuse for a group this is... " currently has
217 messages. That is in itself an indictment of the lack of
imagination in the majority of participants, who agree with the
depressing sentiment but do nothing about starting a more positive
thread. Furthermore, it is indicative of a deep malaise lurking like
an infection that the offensive thread was started before Christmas
and no one said, "Hey, that's a bit intolerant in the season of
goodwill."

Making such a comment is its own form of intolerance...

I know, Keith [said in a caring, sharing voice, like a Labour Party
spokesman interviewed on the gogglebox about old ladies who can't walk
because the National Health is too ****ed up to do simple hip
replacements], I know. But what can one do except keep quiet about the
fact that there are arseholes abroad -- and loud? I try but I don't
think I'll ever be quite that cringemakingly politically correct; in
fact, it is more likely that I shall first believe in unscientific
crap like global warming -- and you know that one's got Buckley's
chance (1).

(1) For the untravelled, in Melbourne there is, or used to be, a
department store called Buckley & Nunn.

Is it? My next door neighbour is a 75 year old widow and has had both done
- and a knee. And just recently both cataracts removed. Believe me she is
from a generation who wouldn't have bothered with health insurance for
herself as her family comes first when money is tight - as it was when
they were growing up.

Oh, bad luck Plowie - I thought everyone in Lunnun had teenybopper
neighbours with nipple rings and a penchant for topless sunbathing on nearby
flat roofs!

Plowie lives in a house with a flat roof? In rainy little old London,
England? Now we know he is an engineer: efficiency above common sense!

By the way, Keith, you haven't lived if you think nipple rings are
imaginative orifice jewellery...

AFAIK Plowie lives in Balham which, to be fair, isn't the Hogarthian
******** it once was - the story is he couldn't get the busses to stop
outside his house, so he dug a hole:

The house itself has a conventional pitched roof being a Victorian design.
But I do indeed have a roof terrace above the rear addition. Designed by
myself. Bitumen on marine ply and faced with GRP concrete tiles. A real
sun trap as it faces south. On the day the sun shines, obviously.

It's not difficult to construct a decent flat roof - only costly. And of
course it should never be truly flat.

I know what a 'Lombard' is - 'loads of money but a right dickhead', but no
idea what a 'Lomborg' is!

The NHS is going through a 'suits n' targets' phase and is the biggest cash
cow this country's got right now, but I can't comment - I'm not even
registered with a Gee Pee myself, yet Swim did very nicely off NHS
'procurement' fiascos last year!

I once had a solicitor with an office in Lombard Street. He bragged
that he had only three books in his office. He died worth half a
million. He inherited a million... Your description of him fits to a

There's plenty of idiots calling themselves 'businessmen' because it's
taking 3 years or so to erode their redundancy money/inheritances/lotto wins
