Already answered in r.a.p.

Probably Vortexions and not synched. They had AC mains driven synchronous
motors and besides the Vortexions appear to be mono types.

Already answered in r.a.p.

Indeed, and in those days it was not uncommon to record to two machines
at once keeping one as a safety copy in case someone cocked up the editing.

Recording in duplex is till the way for important stuff. Even digital
recorders can fail. ;-)
