Hooray! Now I hope someone does the same for other purveyors of snake-oil.

Unfortunately, looking at his web site, the judgment only appears to
have applied to that one product. It is still full of similar crap
elsewhere.

Yes, under any sort of objective measurement, and certainly in comparison
with any of the then current distribution media, LPs, cassettes, radio.

True, there's a big difference between an advertising slogan and reams of
quasi scientific guff.

Nice site, what a super system, nice turntable collection. I see you started
with a Goldring, I remember dithering over whether to get a G800 or a G850
for my Garrard sp25 and then breaking the stylus after two days. Such is
life at the high end.

Ah yes, I'd like to see the HiFi, cosmetic and alternative medicine
industries forced to back up their claims.
Your post prompted me to have a look at the Russ Andrews website, and I
noticed that some of the most extravagant claims are made by their mates
in the magazines. I'm not sure that it would be possible to challenge that.
There are some exceptions though, I especially liked the "Nespa #1 CD &
DVD finaliser" which
"offers a way to 'finalise' the manufacturing process of CDs and DVDs by
shining a very high intensity light at an inserted disc.
We've found that treated discs sound more natural, more detailed and
less fatiguing - more 'vinyl-like'."
Wow, and you get change from £400 too!

My first thought... if this is so effective why don't CD pressing plants
do it? As well as cleaning the "mould release agent" off the disc...
after all they do clean the discs once they've been stamped and lacquered.

Of course, as long as the 1s and 0s get from the CD to the DAC without
corruption then these treatments won't make a blind bit of difference...
had to laugh at the SuperSocket that RA sells. It's had its contacts
sprayed with some fancy polish. That's it. If it had RFI filtering then
it might make a difference... but polished contacts? Errm...

The biggest problem with the likes of Russ Andrews is that it breeds
cynicism. You get something unexpected that makes a difference (eg
speaker cables - note that I don't want to get into a cable sound
argument here, I'm just using that example to illustrate this point) and
having been fed a steady diet of snake oil by the likes of Russ A all
the regulars in here respond with "it's all in your mind".

The sad thing is the likes of Russ Andrews (and whoever it was a while
back that was selling the "Clever Little Clock", a digital clock that
would supposedly make your system sound better by being in the same room
as it) causes so much cynicism that many people think that all hi-fi is
therefore about selling snake oil!
