: Yes I have downloaded the manual and yes I am competent
at setting up
: T/Ts.
:
: So just a brief question to clarify one point please.
:
: In the manual it alludes to the arm dampener as if it is
supposed to
: remain in contact with the arm while playing. Is this
so? Or does it
: only contact the arm when the lift is engaged?
:
: The problem is I can't seem to adjust the lift mechanism
low enough to
: clear the arm when the stylus is in contact with the
record. BTW cart is
: a Shure V15V.
:
: **Nice cartridge. It deserves a better arm than the SME.
Having said that,
: damping the V15V is not really necessary. The damping
system is there to
: counteract the crappy bearings of the SME, when used with
MC carts. These
: comments do not apply to the SME V, which is a stunning
tone arm.
:
Hi Trevor, I am only using the V15V to set up and test the
arm. I will be using a Garrot Bros FGS cart later.

**You may be disappointed. The V15-V is a VERY good cartridge. Arguably the
finest MM ever made. I'll take when you've finished with it.

I have had the Garrott for over a year and is my "weapon of choice". When I
first got it played a test LP and recorded both carts at 24bit 96kHz and
then compared the two sets of data in CEP. Very little between the two.

Sound wise was another matter. I even have Alan R. to back this up as well,
the Garrott produces far less surface noise than the Shure. I have talked
to Garrott (Philippe) about this and he says it is due to the diamond
profile. Shrug! All I know is it works.

The Shure is an excellent cart and it is good to keep as spare or back up
especially since I have a brand new genuine stylus for it as well so it
should last a while ;-)

And in cases like this I can compare the two arms with know similar carts on
two identical T/Ts. If I can talk Alan R. into brining his V15V over when
he comes next we can compare like for like.

Cheers TT

PS I have your cables and will be testing those very soon as well. Too much
to test, not enough time to listen to music ;-)

If I'm closer, I'd take it - just to save you the delivery costs. :-)

Slainte,

Generous to a fault as ever.

Jim if are you still looking for another V15 III body for your test
series then I have one I can donate if you email me an address to
send it to, also a Decca London (gold, i think) which you might like
to play with.
The MR stylus pictured in the latest article looks an odd beast in
comparison to the others does it not?

**LOL! It's a push Jim. Terry resides on the other side of Australia to me.
It's a bloody long way away. Not quite as far as the UK though.

[Aside] I recall my first international air flight flying due North (from
Sydney). I fell asleep for a few hours. When I awoke, I asked my girlfriend
where we were. "Don't bother answering" I said. " I can see the red soil.
We're still flying over Australia." It's a big place.
