Default Isolating speakers from the floor

Has anyone got any experience and suggestions of DIY methods of isolating
speakers from the floor? I'm looking to do it to reduce the amount of noise
transferred through the floor to downstairs, rather than as a method of
altering sound quality.

This is not easy; if you make an isolation system that works down to an
adequately low frequency, it is likely that the speakers will be
unstable and wobbly. You could always hang them from the ceiling. Anyone
living above?

You could try either isolation mountings of the kind sold for various
engineering purposes, or a half-inflated inner tube. I've used both methods
for optical tables to cut down vibration transfer levels.

It occurs to me that a few layers of bubble-wrap might also do the job if
the speakers aren't too heavy.

However you may find that there is still noise downstairs. And anything
that really isolates may also be unstable, so try these methods with care.

Slainte,

Jim

"Doki" = Dickhead

** Totally impossible.

The low frequency sound pressure in the room is what shakes the floor.

** Just pour several tonnes of concrete over the whole upper floor of your
place.

** That is 100% IDIOT advice.

The cabinets are NOT responsible for shaking the floor.

Well, you answer the question then - do you need me to repeat it?

If I have understood the question correctly...

....have you considered a good boarding school?

If the problem really is transmission of vibrations then decoupling the
speakers from the floor with a layer or two of carpet and a bit of mass
like a paving stoneon top would help. Assuming, of course that you can't
fix them to the wall.
Cutting the low frequencies might be a better approach.
At the end of this road of course lie headphones.....
