The strangest thing happened to me yesterday.
I was sitting on my bed and rested my head (the temple) on my hand and I
could hear a buzzing. Now, I'd had a bad headache a few days before but
it didn't sound like the tinnitus associated with it.
So, I removed my head from my hand and the sound stopped. Then the penny
dropped, you can get bone conduction hearing.
Sure enough it was the 11W CFL lamp in my bedside light about 2-3 feet
away. If I put my ear up close to it I could hear exactly the same
sound.
Is that curious or what ?

You need a tinfoil hat - I think aliens are listening to your brain ;-)
I'm sure aliens could find better things to listen to.

All they will get is crickets.

I've heard very funny things. The most common is
a tinnitus like sound, BUT ... it seems to come
from outside my ears. If I move the flat side of a book,
or better my hand somewhat cupped, from right up against my ear
to far away I hear a periodic variation in intensity! It
is usually in th 8-10 kHz region, as measured from the null spacings.
I supposed it could come from inside the ear ... but that would require
that the ear actually be generating sound! I should try recording
it, but I have never been able to get a recording setup going before it
stops.

Not so far fetched. There is a number of muscles associated with the middle
ear that vary the impedance of the acoustic path in response to loud sounds,
the so-called Middle Ear Reflex. These muscles have been shown to be capable
of spontaneous activity. See he

Just maybe...your auditary system is working in reverse....middle ear muscle
activity causing the eardrum to emit sounds ?

Oh, no, not this urban legend again. The effectiveness (or lack
thereof) of tinfoil (or its equivalent, aluminum foil) hats was
investigated at MIT several years ago, with startling results:
