Very interesting to me because I built a pair of IPL S5TL transmission
lines
about 2 years ago. Took lots of pics intending to put my experiences up on
a
website but never got around to it. My experience mirrors yours...I had a
pair of 30 yo Wharfedales with bass driver surrounds full of holes and
decided to update.
The only difference was that I bought the mdf locally and cut out the
cabinet parts myself. Like you, I finished my cabinets/bases in satin
black
paint and they look just like yours :-)
After 2 years I'm still very pleased with them...especially the accurate
bass that makes its presence clearly felt without the excessive
booming/thudding so prevalent among retail home cinema type setups. IMO,
as
always.
Mr. Leslie is an excellent and knowledgeable guy to deal with and his
products are great.
Good to know that Ivan of IPL has another satisfied customer. The S5TL's
were very tempting but out of my price range and a little too
large........maybe one day.
There was a time when I had the facilities to cut MDF accurately in my
garage 'workshop' and would have seriously considered making the cabinets
and saving some dosh. Now it's a storage area for the usual junk and a
motorbike.
Before I chose the S3TLM Ribbons I had a look at Wilmslow Audio kits but was
disappointed by the lack of product details and the seemingly high prices.
As for the sound quality I can only compare them to my old IMF's......no
contest! The IPL's are clean and open with a solid bass that sometimes takes
me by surprise, never boxy or boomy.
Definitely money well spent.
