A Speaker Shootout - B&W DM2 vs. TDL Studio 1m
I've got a thing about acoustic lines and speakers :-)
A friend had a problem with WAF, and I've ended up with his old B&W
DM2's as after 35 years of his enjoyment his wife has made him buy
something a little more compact ;-(
So I've got 3yr old TDL Studio 1 transmission lines in this room, and
have rigged up the DM2's in a similar but opposite location. Mission
Cyrus straight line amp driving...
Well, it's 32 years between them ... and the result?
Wow. Say, apart from size of the box, did any speaker developments
actually happen in the last 30 years?
These are the same.
http://www.vinylengine.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9470
The vintage B&W's have got loads better stereo imagery, acoustic guitar
and piano are there AND pretty much the same boomless bass of the TDL's.
It's just, well, they are huge!! (and they could probably do with
exciting waves in a larger room). Damm, this is tough - I'm listening to
them at the moment playing a DALI demonstrator CD. I so wish I could fit
them in this room...
I'm probably going to be selling them for him, and am looking for an
enthusiast that would cherish the performance they can make, rather than
someone looking for random speakers for background 'wallpaper' music. I
think these are the sort of speakers you buy once and don't really think
about changing. Kind of the way I felt about my TDLs.
For that reason I don't think eBay is the right place, or is it?
Suggestions? I'm in London BTW.

Agreed. I am still using my late '80s vintage Apogee Duetta
Signatures, for the simple reason that I haven't heard anything more
musical at any price since Apogee went belly up - and I include the
mighty B&W 800D and ATC SCM70. I suspect the new big Quads would be a
match, but why would I change?

How's things, Don - keeping well? Not out on your bike in this lovely
weather? Must be perfect for a pushbike - I've just had a tootle round on my
greatly reduced* motorbike and it was v. nice but a little fresh round the
knees!
*Self-regulation, I'm afraid - they're locking people up now for the speeds
I've been doing lately, so I've downsized meself!

Yup, plenty. Did Edinburgh to Newcastle via all the hilly bits with my
brother and some mates during the summer. This August we are going
coast to coast across the Pennines.
Last I remember of you and your motorbike you had laid it down
carefully at a roundabout, I think, and were bemoaning the ridiculous
price of bits. Still the same bike? And by "reduced" do you mean you
didn't eventually buy the bits....

Ah - I guess you are now the proud owner of an FS1E.

Streuth! I'm impressed! (But *not* tempted....)

They repaired the Suzuki quite literally *better than new* as they had
promised, but there's been a couple of Triumphs and 3 Ducatis in quick
succession since that one!
(Kinda getting it all out of my system, I guess!)

Not quite, but almost! :-)
