Those proper Tannoy's or the newer ones?...

Newer ones - triangular cabinets.

Not proper ones then like GRF's ...

They are '609's I believe.

I had a pair of those GRF monsters given to me when we moved in, but I put
them in a skip when someone here posted here that 'all old Tannoys were
crap' or summat similar - a pity as they looked to be in perfect
condition....

;-)

Yep! Always! No such thing as *bargain Tannoys* on eBay - you've gotta find
'em in someone's....

Of course you bloody *ought* - how will yo know if you don't grab 'em -
provided they are sill cheap. If you don't like them or they need too much
work you can knock them out on eBay. You'll have no trouble selling them
*collected*!!

Well, we've just fed the fox and now it's time to try out the new *full HD*
1080 PJ!! Latest Terninator and Star Trek trailers to start with - both
filmed at the Valasquez rocks at some point, I suspect! (Where the Cisco Kid
used to ride!! :-)

Bloody trailers wouldn't run - my son had burned them onto a BD DVD and had
given me the .iso on my portable hard drive, so I burned a BD-RE proper but
they still would go.

Watched the 'Burn-E' short for a 1080 comparison and wuz *blown away* - vast
improvement on the 720 PJ (no downscaling)* but not possible to photograph
the screen and get a decent picture yet as stills don't freeze razor sharp
on the Samsing player we're using and the settings need tweaking - here's a
quick (handheld Nikon/Voigtlander DSLR) shot of the 'Piracy' screen to give
you an idea:

http://www.moirac.adsl24.co.uk/Piracy.JPG

The screen's only temporary (note the wiggly lines) but that image is 6'
wide atm and will be wider soon - note part obscured by the back of my chair
in the bottom right!!

* These digiclowns that think signals aren't bashed about by processing
should have a look at the damage that can be done by upscaling and
downscaling *video*....

Stills aren't "razor sharp" regardless of which player you are using. Don't
forget that even "full" 1080p HD is only equivalent to a 2megapixel still
image (and would you blow one of them up to 6' wide?)

Depends what you mean by "processing", there are processes and processes.
It's not that many years ago the TV standards conversion (which is what up
and downscaling is) could only be done by bits of pro-video kit that cost
megabucks, it still amazes me that you can get a standards converter for
"free" inside a cheap domestic BD player at all, you can't expect it to be
done well at the price. Audio sample rate conversion is a doddle by
comparison.

But if you are basing your comments by comparing one projector with another
may I suggest that that might have just a little to do with the difference?

David.

What are your terms of reference - a 'perfect' 120 neg from a
Zeiss/Hasselblad rig? Of course the phrase 'razor sharp' on a 6' wide screen
from a projected digital source is *relative* but your comparison is to a 2
Megapixel what?...

Huh ???

Of course it bloody does - this guy puts it a little better than I ever
could:

As usual Keith, you have no clue as to what the actual processing was, and
what it corresponds to for audio.

In general when audio is upscaled and downscaled, the upscaling and
downscaling are indeed the extend of the processing.

When video is processed, there is are a number of implied uncompressions and
recompressions of the video that are implied.

In your case, the *actual* operations we compressed data - uncompressed
data - upscaling - compressed data - uncompressed data - downscaling -
compressed data. All of those expansions and compressions are likely
where the quality was lost.

Now let's look at the degree of compression. 1080i = 1920 x 1080 x 30 fps x
3 bytes per pixel. This equals 186,624,000 bytes per second or 186 megabytes
per second. HDTV compresses this down to no less than 20 megabytes per
second for an overall compression ratio of about 10 which is about the same
amount of compression as a 128 Kbit MP3.
