In what capacity?, tea boy? How well acquainted are they with the
deliberations of the CH4 board?

David stop being an arse, no they weren't tea boys they are management
in another commercial radio group, who wouldn't like being bandied about
over newsnet thanks..

Most people who work in Commercial Radio aren't management, so I'm not sure
how I was supposed to have known what level your informants were at. Rumour
and speculation is just as rife amongst the workers as it is in the board
room!

Well there are a lot of "suits" thats a fact;!..

National transmission costs especially digital ones are expensive
compared to the costs of running a radio station.. At that level..

Are they?, how do I know that if you won't give figures?

Well thats between the broadcaster and the supplier and nope, I don't
know the exact sums but its in the millions..

The simple answer is that you have no choice, they own the bulk of the
transmission infrastructure especially all the high masted ones for wide
area broadcast. The planners aren't going to allow you to put up Wrotham
MK2 or Crystal palace MK2 you simply have to go to the monopoly
supplier.

There is no effective competition in the marketplace at all.

And when there isn't any competition .. what do you think happens to
prices?..

So where are the Monopoly and mergers commission?, where is Ofcom in all
this?

They just let them get on with it all they have stipulated that they
must give existing customers a small reduction in cost for a while .

I rather doubt anyone there understood the business at all..

And they have formed the Office of the Broadcast transmission
adjudicator who's run by and ex Arqiva man;!. Who's done nothing much
except rattle on about the price of second user Tx equipment when the
real cost is where you put that and hand your aerials!..

*IF* transmission costs are actually so high that they dominate the costs of
running a radio station (and I only have your word for it that they are)
then the government are allowing a private company to dictate broadcasting
policy in this country, which seems mighty odd to me.

Well consider a medium power local station service some 20 miles radius
for a 1 to 2 kW ERP service you can say goodbye to around £45,000 per
annum prolly more in the Urban areas.. And around 70 K to be on DAB..

Well its all run by the Aussies now, Murdoch and Sky and Macquarie bank
own Arqiva!..

As is a lot of our infrastructure, indeed our local water co is owned by
the Chinese;(..

David.

Makes the running costs of a small local radio station somewhere in the
order of around half a million a year then?

Nothing in today's terms - as a builders merchant (not a builder, as some
seem to think) my biggest single *month's* turnover was 730K....

Ah yes, when we had an Empire (only yesterday in the Great Scheme) the world
worked for *us* - the boot's on the other foot now...

Fair old bit less than that .. most who are on the air are hardly paid
the minimum wage theres no shortage of wannabee DJ's and "Presenters"..

And a lot is voice tracked and on automation..
