A pal phoned up the other day with a tale of woe - they'd done a house
exchange with some Belgians and come home to find their speakers not well.
Seems the visitors had teenagers. ;-)

Went across with a test CD and sure enough both bass units are rubbing.
Turned the cabinets upside down - no difference. Dunno if the HF 1300s
have survived - difficult to tell until the bass units are fixed.

Assuming the worst and both bass units and HF 1300 need replacing, is it
economic to do so? They were overhauled about 10 years ago, and not cheap
then.

If not, what is a suitable replacement these days? My pal was happy with
them and would want something pretty close.

No I hadn't and thanks very much. I did find it interesting - as an aside
- that they can supply repair kits for the HF 1300, as so many other makes
use them.

One thing that isn't mentioned on that web page is that although
Spendor can't supply the supertweeter anymore, you can still get them
direct from Coles:

Excellent, thanks. Is there an easy way to tell if a working one hasn't
been damaged? It's quite easy with bass units - and you can take the HF
1300 apart and look at the coil for signs of overheating.

Looks like it it's possible to get these oldies back to spec.

As a follow up, been in touch with Spendor and they want just shy of 100
quid for a pair of HF1300 repair kits. So well over double the price
mentioned in that article.

Bloody hell. I sold a good pair of HF1300s for twenty quid last year.
If I'd known about that...

I'd have thought you'd have got much more - was it on Ebay?
Trouble with HF 1300s is there are many many varieties. And that's before
you do individual selection as the BBC used to for the LS5/1.

Not Ebay - somebody wanted some, and I just hazarded a number. They'd
been in a box on top of a wardrobe for thirty years.

I didn't know they selected them for the LS5/1. Certainly KEF had to
select the woofers just to get the resonance frequency within +/- 5Hz
of the right frequency.
