Hi,
We will be moving from Oxford to Dorset (BH20 5BB). At present I use a Denon
tuner. I am concerned about getting good FM reception in this part of Dorset
and am wondering about the relative qualities of sound derived from FM and
from our digital TV (we will be using Sky). Both will feed into a decent amp
and speakers. I mainly listen to classical music.

I get excellent sound from satellite radio for classical music. If
your receiver has a digital output, using that with a good external
DAC could improve things. I use a Behringer SRC2496. However, the
Cambridge DACMagic (from Richer Sounds) has received very good reports
on this group.

My experience is that good satellite (or Freeview) radio is better
than good FM for classical music. My FM tuner has sat in the loft for
the last few years since I moved to a new house without an FM aerial.

I also prefer Freeview to FM for radio 3 (and, of course BBC TV4). But I
now tend listen to the (aac) iPlayer and find 'listen again' very
convenient as well as giving good sound. I was re-listening to the NYOGB
Prom just half and hour ago that way. Using a DACMagic to extract the audio
from a computer running Ubuntu Linux. Apart from occasional tests I have
ceased using FM for serious listening.

Slainte,

Jim

Which proves you're listening to the music, not the audio. Good. You
are free of the audiophile disease. Spread the word!
