The best image I ever got was from a pair of Dalquist speakers. 5
drivers per box, rather inaccurate response but amazing stereo when
positioned with lots of clear space around them.
FWIW as a general rule I tend to find you tend to get better imaging if the
speakers and listening position are all well clear of the walls. Beyond
that it becomes a matter of having the patience and ability to keep
experimenting and adjusting positions, etc. If circumstances prevent this
then it may be impossible to get a good image, alas.

Jim

For me, clear of the walls is not an option. But I'm not so compulsive that
my life will be ruined for lack of a decent stereo image. As per your and
Laurence's advice I'll carry on tweaking within the room constraints.
Thanks.

When I see this 'stereo sweet spot' obsessiveness creeping in to the
proceedings, I visualize a dentist's chair bolted to the floor with
velcro wrist restraints on the arms....

I've heard systems where the sweet spot WAS that small! And ones
where it was wide enough for several listeners to share a stereo
image.

Must be me - my main system's stereo image is vast and appears to be as
much behind and beyond the speakers as it is pushed out into the front!
I just walk away from it and hear it *over there* - IYSWIM...??

You use ESLs don't you Jim? They are especially demanding
for optimum listening. In his own listening room, PW had them
set quite a distance from the rear walls.
Their stereo imaging is impressive, but in my experience the
sweet spot is rarely wider than a single chair.

That may well be so. Hard for me to tell since I've never heard any other
speakers in a domestic situation giving equal results. So I suspect the
need to be fussy about positioning, etc, may go with the ability to then
get such good results! :-)

Yes, that wouldn't surprise me. It seems unlikely that they would work OK
near walls.

Mine also. Although I suspect you get a wider area if the room is larger,
etc. Snag then being to get a decent sound level if you aren't in in the
room built by the 'man from SME'. :-)
In some ways the ESLs are like the world's biggest and best pair of
headphones.

Jim

PW had three chairs positioned behind one another. Rather like
sitting in a bus. He remarked, with a twinkle in his eye. that this
also helped to discourage attempts at conversation while listening:-)
