(Assuming you are happy to solder leads, etc.) Buy a couple of the small signal transformers sold by CPC or similar. Try using those to step up the output from the player. That 'line level' drive out of the earphone socket is usually with the players volume control straining at the limit, and probably over the limit that is judged safe to let loose on young ears.
