I'm gonna give it a try - thanks.

Not really. ROX makes life easier from my POV as it gives me the same
sort of filer/GUI as I'm accustomed to with RISC OS. And is a doddle to
install via synaptic or 'zero install'.

Maybe I'll give it a try on a VM

No need for a VM if you are already running Ubuntu/Xubuntu.

All you have to do is install ROX via synaptic. Then issue either 'rox' or
'rox -S' via a terminal or launcher. This will start them up. You can then
either shut them down, or shut down the session to end them. So to try them
out you don't need to replace the GUI or filter that are standard for
Ubuntu/Xubuntu. Running ROX doesn't change any of your default desktop
settings unless you tell it to do so, or say it should replace your
standard session.

FWIW I start up my Linux boxes with the default Gnome or xfce4 desktops.
Then launch 'rox -S'. The main alteration I've made to the defaults is to
remove the lower Gnome and xfce4 panels to make room for the ROX taskbar.
But there is no need for that if you just want to try out ROX.

I've often plugged such things into a pro mixer line input - which is less
sensitive than most domestic ones - and never found them lacking in level.
Of course this is only for a quick listen - not too worried about absolute
quality.

It will probably be OK, though, as the chances are it expects to drive
headphones. The only ways to know are to do some measurements or simply
give it a try!

I think I may have found a loud enough non-ipod player now. But I'm
gonna give the transformer idea a try just for the hell of it. Thanks
for such an in-depth answer.

Please let us know how you get on if you get a chance. I am now curious to
know if the tranformers work OK for the purpose you intend. Would be useful
to know if there is a snag.

I have a cable with mini jack on one end and TRS on the
other, used for transferring demo material. I have done
this with the iPod Nano - the level is adequate for a Studer
console.

Professionally speaking, a line input is a line input regardless of the
make of console, so no need to name drop. Some may have a trim control
allowing a wider range of inputs, though. But I was referring actually to
a mixer where you can only attenuate the line input - like most.
