Bit OT but my brother's asked - £400 worth of sound to supplement his
42" TV in a largish (about 30' x 20') lounge. Mainly for TV/film. Couple
of complications:

* He doesn't want trailing wires, or the hassle of routing cables. So
I've tried to steer him in the direction of those 2.1 soundbar things,
like this:

Which of course means no rear speakers. Personally, I think they're very
effective and add quite a bit to films. Not enough for me to bother mind
- but then I listen to music mostly. Does anyone know if the wireless
speakers work - things like this:

* He's pretty obsessed with the appearance of the thing. He's just
thrown a DVD recorder I gave him in the bin because it's silver(!). So
it has to be black and discrete and match his Sony telly. Much as I
think a 'normal' hifi is the best way to go, I don't think the
aesthetics would cut it.

Overall, I've asked him to go to a shop and get some advice. For a
number of reasons (some good, some questionable) I don't think he's
going to do that. Any ideas?

Sounds like a prat. He wants to get a couple of 2K bass amps and some butt
kickers under his seat.

Hi Rob! Your brother seems to know what he likes (or dislikes) - I'd be
tempted to let him sort himself out. The soundbar seems to me to be the best
option; there are a number to choose from, some quite expensive like the
Samsung HT BD8200 which I believe has a BluRay player in it...??

Hi Keith - he surely does! I've fallen foul of this sibling advice thing
before, so quite wary nowadays (I can blame you lot!). He's going for
the Samsung HWC450 soundbar I suspect as he has a BR player. Mind, he
watches most of his films online through LoveFilm, and his clever
networked Sony telly.

It's really about sound for him, though, which makes the 'sound with
looks at a budget' thing quite frustrating.

The 'aesthetics' (appearance) of domestic audio has been of supreme
importance ever since the very early days when 'lab style' was acceptable.
Today, *style* is everything and 'sound quality' has to take secend place -
your brother is simply following the current trend.
