Picked up another pair from a deceased friend. I already have a pair.

These are distorting. The bass units appear fine, and I've had the HF
1300s apart to look at the coils - again ok. Any ideas about checking the
STC units? The distortion is most noticeable on some types of speech -
mainly female. If I roll the treble off it all but disappears.

What you call the STC unit is actually a Coles 4001. It shouldn't
be too difficult to find an alternative if you can't find
originals. Try www.wilmslow-audio.co.uk

Or give Spendor audio a ring they might be able to help you still Dave..

And if they are in good condition and working within their design limits
... they don't distort!...

I was wondering if there was a test method I didn't know of?

Indeed. Extremely low distortion even by the best of today's standards.
Assuming they haven't been thrashed. The BBC knew a thing or two about
speaker design. When the BBC was the BBC, of course.

I could, of course, just swap them from the known good pair. But wondered
if anyone had any bright ideas about testing them?

Oh its silly time. Of course rather than gone hard they could be soft and
bottoming. In any case its non linear. I think a lot of drive units with
plastic parts tend to change over time.

That's common with the bass units - but I'm happy they're ok. The test I
use is to sweep them with an oscillator sine wave at a lowish level.
You'll here them scraping at some frequency. If it's slight, turning the
units upside down often helps.

Tweeters, however, usually have fried coils through overload. The HF 1300
is easy to take apart and physically examine the speech coil - it's
obvious when it's damaged and I have spare coils. The STC or Coles unit
appears to be sealed.
