Oops. Sorry. I originally posted this to the wrong group...
I've just put up a new page on the Armstrong site.

Nice looking receiver though I'm assuming the tuner VFD is not quite so
obvious in real life. What's the third top row switch do? Looks like a
mute and loudness to the left of it but can't quite make out the legend
on the third one.
From left to right -
"-15dB" (i.e. level reduction)
"loudness"
"duplicate" (interconnect tape 1 and 2 leaving the user freedom of choice
to listen to any other input while duplicating.)
Probably could have dropped the OTT volume -dB scale
too as ruins the otherwise clean lines.
Personally, I prefer the scale. IIRC the plan was to use a good stepped
Alps 400mm pot like the one that I ended up using in the 730/732.
In essence, the 726 nominally had all the 'features' that a number of
people requested in their return-cards for the 600 they'd just bought.
There was a catch-all question on the warranty registration card asking
buyers what extra feature they'd have liked. The most popular request was
"two headphone outlets so two people can use phones together". But two tape
decks, and two cart inputs, etc, were also often requested.
If the process had continued some of the features would probably have been
dropped once the model/photos had been shown to people and their reactions
collected. But in the end the focus on a receiver was dumped in favour of a
no-nonsense pre/power amp with the intent of adding a tuner later as a
seperate item.
Do you own the receiver photographed or just historical photo's?
There never was a "receiver" as such. The photos are of a model made up
from wood/plastic/metal to look and feel like what was planned. I did see
the model, but now only have photos.
FWIW I also have photos of the similar model made for the 626, and may put
them up in due course.
Slainte,
Jim
