I often have a suspicion that EMI made their recordings with monitors
that had a suckout in the 2-5kHz range. Could explain why so many of
their classical recordings seem to have a peak in that range.

Could be. I remember dubbing a soap opera in an unfamiliar dubbing suite
with ancient equipment and speakers - said to have all come from Abbey
Road. I tweaked the dialogue tracks to sound good to me (and the director)
on those speakers.

I watched it go out and it was far too 'bright'. But suppose it's better
that way than the other. I managed to correct the other episodes I'd done
before they were transmitted.

But I agree that that kind of 'sound' was more taken as the norm some
decades ago in the UK.

To e-mail, change noise into sound.
Thanks for the info guys. I've managed to get some crossovers and have just taken the back off the speakers. They all seem to be Richard Allan make and in great condition. My only problem now (sorry to be such an idiot) is in wiring in the crossovers. I'm OK in general, but there are two copper wires coming from the top and bottom of the existing crossover (four in total) which connect into two wooden discs with a piece of metal across the top. These are attached to the side of the cabinet. Any ideas what they might be????

Thanks again for your time
