Could be a 'better' speaker would also need a more powerful amp to drive
it. Most of these things have a tiny output relying on a very efficient
speaker. What you would need to do is get a line level output from it and
feed that to a better amp and speakers.

But if it's just for the workshop, keep an eye on your local FreeCycle.
People chuck out perfectly serviceable but old real Hi-Fi systems and
speakers.
