I was amused to hear on today's BBC R4 'Moneybox' programme about
someone who bought, on ebay, a pair of Quads, neither of which worked.
He wanted advice on getting his money back.
I wonder if he remembered to plug them in and switch them on!

Yes - I heard it too. Seems the seller had said they were untested. If I'd
bought them - and travelled miles to pick them up - I'd have taken the
means to test them with me.

If I heard it right - was in the car - the seller offered to pay to have
them fixed at Quad, but the buyer said it would take too long. And all the
hassle was over who would pay the return carriage. IIRC, it's an Ebay
condition the buyer pays to return things regardless of who's to blame.

The odd thing was that both were completely dead, if I heard it right.
It's difficult to see how that situation could arise.
I expect they are OK and he doesn't know that they need power.

He did sound dopey.

I'd have taken the 'send them back to Quad and get them repaired'
option, which I think was offered at £1600, seller pays.

** It's far from impossible with *untested* second hand Quad ESLs -
particularly ESL63s.

I expect they are OK and he doesn't know that they need power.

** Hardly likely.

BTW:

I heard a plausible story once about a teenage boy in the early 1960s who
bought an "electric" guitar - not knowing any better, he made up a lead
connecting a 1/4 inch jack plug to a domestic AC plug to run it.

It does seem strange that they both had the same fault - presumably to do
with the power supply? And was the Quad quote of £1600 for a full overhaul
with new panels? Can't see it costing that much to fix a couple of power
supplies.
