BT didn't advertise it or own a news server, so they silently redirected
requests from BT News to Giganews. It was a useful service, as it did
binary groups as well as text only, but unless you both subscribed to BT
Broadband and logged on from your registered BT number, it wouldn't let
you play.

BT subscribers are now entitled to a "special deal" from Giganews if thy
want to continue using the service. They're not advertising that either....

Yes, that makes sense. Just a shame about the sound. I recall the
definition of 'pro' audio gear is "Can be dragged across the floor by its
mains lead and thown into a van. Then work fine at the next gig." 8-]

Sound as in "I can hear something LOUD". :-)

Hopefully, the OP has a situation where they can use the speakers with due
care.

Thanks for the info John, Mike...I'm the lurker formally known as TonyL
and this is by way of a test via eternal-september as well as a response
to the OP regarding Bose.

The new BT 'special deal' involved a monthly fee to Giganews and the
only newsgroup I follow is this one so it was good to find a reliable
donation funded service. I may donate a few quid if all goes well.

Regarding Bose....I'm no audio connoisseur and my comments on Bose were
in the context of mobile PA systems...village fetes and the like for
which the audio quality was adequate rather than thrilling, IMO. The
tough black plastic Bose units we used on top of poles for our PA rigs
served the purpose very well. As for audio feedback...we used careful
siting plus a digital frequency shifter when needed. You can imagine the
effect of that on music! The SM58 microphones with their 'warm' response
would probably have served quite well as hammers..their robustness and
cardoid response were excellent for our purposes.

I think the lukewarm comments on Bose in here are from those whose main
priority is audio quality...fair enough. It all depends on context.
