I'm in the process of producing a small selection of 'demo' pages for the
Museum of Communications in Fife. I'm currently writing some brief texts to
accompany photos and other details of some items in their (vast!)
collection. Aim being to get them to proceed with a much bigger website
showing info on many of the objects they have. Sort of web museum.

I've hit a puzzle with a specific item and wonder if anyone here can sort
it out and point to a reliable reference.

This shows a QUAD QCII control unit. I know there were (at least) three
'versions' of these and that this *isn't* the first version as that had
fewer input sockets on the back, etc.

However the QCII manual I have *and* a Wireless Trader service sheet show
versions that differ from this in various details, despite the Trader sheet
outlining the differences between the versions.

Which leaves me feeling that either the trader is wrong, or misses a
version. The manual isn't clear on this, presumably because it accompanied
whatever was its 'current' version.

Alternatively, has this example been modified after sale or some kind of
special made for the BBC or someone else?

Afraid my knowledge of ye olde QUAD models isn't as good as for Armstrong,
so I'm currently puzzled. So, info welcome.

If you scroll round the next/previous you can see some other demo examples,
not all of which have text as yet. Hope to have finished these in the next
day or two. But - if adopted - plan many more examples to be added as and
when I can link objects in the collection with reliable info.

You might be interested that Quad produced a (mono) version of it for the
BBC called a presence unit, where the push buttons selected various mid
range boost, as well as the normal tone controls. With the front panel
suitably engraved which makes me think it was Quad made rather than a BBC
mod.

Thanks. I had read that QUAD had made some 'specials' of the QCII for the
BBC. But no idea of the details.

I'm trying to also find the person who donated it to the Museum in case
they know. Alas, the actual orginal owner may be dead by now. Occupational
hazard of having bought such kit when new!

The question I keep running into is if a company, etc, has an archivist who
keeps such info and ensures no details are lost. Sadly, the answer to such
questions is often a 'No' or a baffled blank look showing such an idea had
never occurred to anyone there. :-/

The other issue of course is that brands often went through several
different hands and companies etc over the years, prompting those in the
know to say, ah yes it is the same design, but made by xgrot inc under
licence etc, and when it comes to distribution, then nobody seems to be
interested in which models of what were handled by whom.
Tannoy has baffled me for some time.
I have a pair of IIILzs here, original Tannoy I'd suspect, but only just.
