Does Jazz FM *ever* broadcast actual Jazz?

No, but BBC4 (tv) isn't bad.

I'd agree with both parts of that. Never heard 'Jazz FM' until last week.
To me it sounds more like "Lift Muzak FM" :- Weird to call it "FM" on
Freeview unless they're saying it means "Freeview Multiplex"...

BBC4 tv I find quite impressive. Bit like BBC2 *used* to be... ;-

I've got it bypassed, but how long does it take to bugger up the screen

on
a
valve (CRT) telly with a fixed 'radio station' logo?

Why not route the audio to your hifi. Then you don't need to keep the TV
turned on.

I'm OK thanks - routing through the DVDR which isn't bothering me now (see
below). There's no 'audio only out' on the model I've got and the 'hifi' is
at the other end of the house!

Conversely, will routing the digibox through a DVDR (which needs to be
switched on) for hours at a time do any harm to said DVDR? (Heat, laser

or
summat?)

I'm not an expert but I think the laser only operates during 'play'.

Yep, I'm cool with this now.

Anybody know a two click way of getting the audio only (up to 6 hours
worth!) off a DVD-RAM disk to HD/CDRW?

Use a computer with a DVD-RAM drive and a CD-RW (or DVD-RW) drive.

Yes, got those - I meant what 'software'?

snip remaining very interesting stuff

Thanks to all of you here - the replies have 'brought me up to speed'
nicely.

Gotta say it though - the 'radio' still doesn't sound too cute (ain't a
patch on stereo FM in my book!), it doesn't really even sound as good as the
normal TV broadcasts.....????

Ah! Well there are plenty to choose from. A lot of people swear by Nero.
I've used Adaptec Easy CD Creator and found it to be pretty good. My new
machine came with Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD which is not as user friendly as
Adaptec but does the job. Pinnacle is a bit like Windows XP in that it tries
to do too much and hold your hand all the time and ends up getting in the
way. It's taken me ages to turn off all the stupid new features in Windows
XP :-(

DAB is crap at anything less than 256 kbps. Since pigs will fly before we
get anything like this bitrate, as far as I'm concerned radio is dying. When
FM goes that will be it.

Sadly the music biz seems to be leaning the same way. Some in the industry
see downloaded music as the future. Well it will only be in my future if it
is uncompressed.

Depends what you want it for. As a replacement for AM radio, much less
than 256 kbps will give better subjective listening.
