Do you really think somebody would try to forge a serial plate? What
else are they going to do with it?

Someone with half a brain cell could try to suggest that it was their
equipment and that it had been stolen.

Of course, to be credible they would have to inform the police and
insurance company, but it should be easy for the genuine owner (without
a receipt) to give evidence (provided they keep copies of emails) that
the claimant was given the number before he contacted the police etc.
