I have tried many of the wizzer cone type speakers but not Lowthers.Of
course all these things need a woofer or subwoofer to sound
bearable.There is no way that 1mm cone excursion can give proper bass[3
or 4 mm can]-even in a back loaded horn.

The Goodmans Axiom 80s are the real deal.Forty years old but in many
ways still the best cone speaker made.


The speakers are not yet 24 hours old, so only immediate reactions are
possible. They are my 6th pair of 'firewood horns' so I had a good idea of
what to expect - or at least I thought I did, until I fired them up! The
first few moments were quite shocking and very *emotional*! (And, believe
me, I am not the emotional type!!)

The sound is very *immediate* and *direct*, the clarity is scary and, after
I had some time with a few records, quite 'terrifying' sounds can be had
from them. (It's almost like they don't want to be friends - does that make
any sense?) Despite the figures and all the 'opinions', the bass is profound
and quite probably all I need - percussive sounds are again quite shocking.
(Visatons on steroids, Fostex on crack cocaine?) Treble is also up there at
what some people might call painful levels!

All these speakers need 'getting used to' (as do any, really) and I'm not
comfortable with the sound from radio yet - they show up the difference
between DAB and FM like nothing else has done to date!! But then, that's no
biggie, I route the radio through to different speakers (on an SS amp)
anyway - my contribution to reducing global warming is not having valves on
all day!

Many of the wizzer cone types have a really "in your face sound".I have
found that Van den Hul carbon fibre interconnects work best with these
because they have a very rich and relaxed sound without loss of detail.
This warms up the sound nicely[Van den Hul The First]Use between source
and preamp.
You might also find that using solid core copper speaker cable rather
than multi strand will give a smoother sound.[solid core lighting cable
works well and is very cheap].
Silver cable would not be a good match.
